Vision
For Karen indigenous people in Burma to be able to live peacefully in a healthy environment and to actively participate in maintaining the ecological balance along with their livelihood security.
Mission
KESAN is a non-profit organization working alongside local communities in Karen State to ensure sustainable livelihoods by preserving indigenous knowledge, building capacity and promoting practice and policy change. KESAN is committed to:
  • supporting community-based livelihood initiatives
  • promoting indigenous knowledge, capabilities and gender equality while enriching livelihoods and biodiversity
  • raising awareness on environment and climate change
  • advocating for policies that ensure people's participation, ownership, gender equity and environmental
sustainability in the development process taking place in the rural areas

KESAN brings together socio-cultural and environmental considerations, to empower local communities to increase their livelihood security by using their own tools and knowledge. KESAN's work is guided by the principles of ownership, participation and women empowerment, as well as sustainability, cultural-relevance and benefit sharing by communities as a whole.

Objectives
  1. Improved livelihood capabilities and resilience for local communities in response to  political hostility, development aggression and climate change
  2. Indigenous and local communities have greater control of and access to resources including lands, forests, water and agricultural biodiversity that are significant to livelihood security and poverty reduction in the rural areas
  3. A democratic and knowledge-based society which embraces and advocates sustainable development principles that incorporate indigenous knowledge, good environmental governance, climate change adaptation, disaster risks reduction and gender equality
